About

The Bay Area Writing Project (BAWP), housed in the Graduate School of Education, is a collaborative program between UC Berkeley and Bay Area schools. For over 30 years, BAWP has been a vital resource for teachers and schools in the Bay Area, not only in the teaching of writing but also as a model of professional development, teacher leadership and reform.

BAWP has two goals in its technology development plan:

  1. Development of an interactive organizational Web presence.
  2. Development of interactive Web-based tools to motivate, guide, organize and publish the results of student and teacher research, reading, and writing at the classroom and school level.

We hope that learning to use #1 will help our teacher consultants to use #2. We tried a few content management systems. With help from the Interactive University at UC Berkeley, Oakland Unified School District, and the Kern County Superintendent of Schools Web team, we settled on Manila, an inexpensive and powerful Weblog software package. Beginning in the summer of 2002, Manila sites were made available for use by our teacher consultants in local districts and schools.
