Experience a Summer of Professional Renewal!

The Summer Institute is at the heart of BAWP's work with teachers and the beginning point for the development of BAWP Teacher Consultants and the teacher leadership that guides and sustains BAWP's work. Through its Invitational Summer Institute, BAWP identifies, celebrates, and enhances the professional roles of experienced classroom teachers. Each year we bring together twenty teachers from across grade levels and disciplines as BAWP Summer Fellows to examine successful classroom practices in teaching writing and using writing to help students learn.

BAWP's belief in the professionalism of teachers is reflected in the design of the institute where Summer Fellows participate in a highly collaborative professional learning community.

Teachers Teaching Teachers

All institute participants present inquiry-based workshops of their own successful teaching practices. Through these workshops, participants get an inside look and understanding of other Bay Area classrooms; learn from the work of others and from looking at their students' work. Participants receive ample support from a BAWP coach to prepare their workshop.

Teachers as Writers

Teachers of writing are most effective when they experience being writers themselves. In writing groups and in an institute mini writing retreat, participants have extensive time and support to write in a range of genres and for a variety of purposes and to be published in an institute anthology. By becoming grounded in the practice of writing, teachers are better positioned to help their students use writing successfully.

Research in the Summer Institute

What do others have to say about the teaching of writing? Read, discuss, argue and write about current research. Through common readings, readings in self-selected areas of interest, and the contributions of guest researchers, participants broaden and deepen their knowledge base and encounter new ideas to spark and challenge their thinking.

Issues of Equity in Teaching and Learning

Interwoven throughout the institute is a focus on equity and what it means in the concrete, day-to-day work in Bay Area schools and classrooms. The institute benefits from the multiple perspectives provided by the diversity and range of Summer Fellows.

The Summer Institute Community

Amid the dynamic of writing, talk and sharing of practice, Summer Fellows build strong ties with each other, develop new networks and resources, and grow as professionals. Great food and snacks foster lively and deep conversations that contribute to a close community.

Established in 1974 in the Graduate School of Education on the Berkeley, the Bay Area Writing Project is the founding site of the National Writing Project. BAWP is dedicated to improving writing and learning in Bay Area schools and committed to the leadership of classroom teachers.
