March 12, 2016 – Assessing Student Understanding
Teaching Writing in the Common Core Era
What uncommonly good ideas for teaching writing are supported by the ELA Common Core State Standards? Join us to look closely at some of the classroom writing practices that are back on the map, and to explore how they play out for students. We now have the opportunity to broaden our writing curriculum. Let’s take on the challenge together!
Keynote: Sandra Murphy served on the writing team of the CCSS writing standards. She is professor Emerita at the University of California, Davis where she also directed the Center for Cooperative Research and Extension Services for Schools and acted as faculty advisor to the Area III Writing Project.
Keynote: Mary Ann Smith directed the Bay Area and California Writing Projects and served as Director of Government Relations and Public Affairs for the National Writing Project. She is co-author, with Sandra Murphy, of several publications on the teaching and assessment of writing, including the recent book, Uncommonly Good Ideas: Teaching Writing in the Common Core Era.
Breakout Session led by BAWP TC Marguerite Sheffer (more information to follow).
