January 20, 2018 Weekend Workshop line-up:

Early Literacy

Young children have fantastic imaginations and are amazing storytellers. Workshops will support primary classroom teachers to support students to understand how their oral composition skills connect to the writing process. Teachers will experience lessons that connect the creative aspects of writing and the mechanics of writing.

This workshop event will feature your choice of one workshop each session.

Location: UC Berkeley, Tolman Hall Education Library (2nd Floor)
Directional signs will be posted the day of the workshops

Come join practicing Teachers as they share techniques and strategies that work in their classrooms. The Bay Area Writing Project is excited to provide high quality professional development opportunities at an affordable price for teachers throughout the Bay Area. This workshop series is perfect for teachers, administrators, coaches, coordinators, student teachers or anyone interested in the teaching of writing.

Session 1:

Writing in Conversation

Presenter: Liz Murray

Dialogue journal writing helps us communicate and build bonds with our students. Through a written conversation, both teacher and student learn more about each other’s life, interests and particular skills, in a low stakes environment. Emergent writers can engage in dialogue journal writing using a variety of tools including symbols, drawings, beginning print, all of which convey meaning. In this workshop we will engage directly with dialogue journal writing and we will explore its usage in the early elementary grades.

Moving Beyond “I’m Done!”: Leveraging Relationships to Support Elaboration

Presenter: Susannah Young

How can I engage students in meaningful writing experiences?  Beginning with the idea that in order to write students need to feel like their experiences and perspectives are interesting, this workshop will model using student-student conversations as a catalyst for writing longer and stronger.

Session 2:

The Power of Pencils… To Sketch, Note Take, Plan, and Develop Powerful Writing

Presenter: Carol Siddle

In this workshop participants will look at the many writing opportunities students can experience through project based learning and integrating curriculum. Through looking at a real world challenge for first graders,  teachers will explore a multi-sensory and multiple intelligence approach to create a classroom environment that is inclusive of our students’ various strengths as learners.

Genre Writing in the Primary Grades

Presenter: Carrie Johnson

Do you want your students to enjoy writing?  Are you hoping to increase their fluency writing in different subject areas?  Do you struggle with how to increase the conventional accuracy of their texts without stifling their voice? We will share ideas about teaching different genres and across different subjects. This workshop will also touch on using partner talk to help student writers construct ideas and narratives.
